Rangers of the Old Dominion

The mission of Rangers of the Old Dominion is to reinforce Catholic values and enhance the traditional manly virtues of self reliance, chivalrous responsibility and unshakable self confidence via a course of instruction in fieldcraft in a contemporary and historical context.  This is in an atmosphere of appreciation and understanding of the historical exceptionalism of the United States, the U.S. Constitution, the extraordinary contributions of Virginia and Virginians since the founding of the Republic.  Troop leaders are both experienced military instructors with advanced educational degrees as well as retired commissioned military officers with over 50 years of combined active duty.

Learning is a combination of classroom instruction and subsequent practical application in the field. Periods of instruction will include a clearly stated syllabus, reading lists and written assignments will be included in the course of instruction.

Battlefield studies and historical site visits will always include a historical role assignment whereby the rangers will brief to the assembled troop the actions of their assigned historical figure and discuss the pros and cons of those actions.  Occasionally an overnight camp will be executed in order to accommodate the mission and terminal learning objectives.

Course of instruction will include but not limited to:

● Providing field expedient water, food and shelter.

● Map and compass work, land navigation, terrain association, pace counting, celestial reference points in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

● Solar stills, water purification, cooking and field sanitation.

● First aid and safety, field hygiene.

● Patrol techniques, formations and hand and arm signals.

● Unarmed, hand to hand and close combat techniques.

● Logistics, communications, tactics, techniques and procedures.

● Tool use and handling, field expedient and traditional weapons construction, safety and handling.

● Water safety and survival.

● Minor and introductory automotive maintenance, carpentry and plumbing skills.
